Do You Have a dream?

Despite much progress during the last century, women and girls throughout the world continue to face serious challenges. While they represent about one-half of the world's population, women suffer disproportionately from many social problems. Approximately 70 percent of the 1.3 billion people who live on $1 a day are women. More women between the ages of 15 and 44 die due to gender-based violence than cancer, malaria, car accidents and war combined. About 90 million girls around the world are deprived of primary education. These are but a few statistics illuminating the obstacles facing women and girls around the world. Soroptimist created the Live Your Dream campaign to raise awareness about these challenges and inspire women from all walks of life to realize their full potential.

What will Soroptimist do to raise awareness of the challenges facing women?

Beginning March 8, 2006, Soroptimists around the world will distribute Live Your Dream pins. Designed compliments of Linda Joy Goldner of Goldner Communications Design in Philadelphia, the pins feature a female form holding up the sun and come mounted on cards containing information about the campaign, the state of the world’s women, and Soroptimist’s mission. Wearing the pin (pictured above) demonstrates a commitment to helping women everywhere to live their dreams.

Why March 8?

Soroptimist chose to launch the event on March 8 in honor of International Women's Day and Women’s History Month (in the United States). Held on March 8 each year, International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on the progress made by women, to call for change, and to appreciate acts of courage and determination in pursuit of women’s rights. Women’s History Month is a month-long celebration in the United States dedicated to recognizing the historic achievements of women.

How will the Live Your Dream campaign help women and girls?

Proceeds from the campaign will benefit local and international Soroptimist programs that improve the lives of women and girls. This includes the Women's Opportunity Awards, which provides cash grants to women seeking to improve their economic situation through additional training and/or education. Since 1972, this program has provided about $15 million in cash grants enabling tens of thousands of women to make a better life for themselves and their families.

How can people support the campaign?

People who are interested in demonstrating their support for the world's women and girls may obtain a pin from Soroptimist members, or order one from Soroptimist headquarters for a suggested donation of $10. Email siahq@soroptimist.org or call 215-893-9000 for more information.
